The week you get the keys

Which services get set up on the call, and which local utilities you still enroll in before the keys.

The week you get the keys

The week the keys change hands, you want two kinds of proof, not one checklist with a single verb. Services set up on the call with Utility Connect should already have confirmations: internet, TV or satellite if you wanted them, phone, home security, insurance, home warranty, and movers, and electricity if your address is in a deregulated market. Local utilities still need your enrollment: gas, water, trash, and electricity if the market is regulated. A checklist does not open a city account. Your call to that provider does.

Two weeks out

Confirm the possession date in the lease or the closing documents. Call (877) 587-9566 or use the form with the full address and that date. On our call, set up the services that can be set up. When the local notes arrive, enroll gas, water, trash, and regulated electric the same day, minus anything the landlord or HOA already covers.

About two weeks is a comfortable window. Forty-five days is as early as it is worth beginning, because install calendars and local start desks both move. Inside this week you are no longer browsing. You are finishing the enrollments that only you can finish, and confirming the setups that were done with you.

Before the truck

  • A confirmation for each service set up on our call
  • A confirmation from you for each local utility you had to enroll
  • Trash requested, if the city does not start it automatically
  • Mail forwarding filed by you with the Postal Service
  • Gate codes and access notes already given for any technician visit booked on the call

Insurance that a lender wants before closing should be set up on the call early enough to meet that deadline. It is not a local utility, and it should not be left for the driveway.

Three days out

Open every confirmation and check the address and the start date. If a local utility has the wrong Thursday, you call them and move it. We cannot move a regulated or municipal start date for you. If a service we set up has the wrong date, call us and we will work that change with you and the provider. If a local confirmation never arrived, assume you are not enrolled.

The first evening

Test the lights, the water, the heat, and the internet. If something we set up is missing, call us with the confirmation in hand. If a local utility was supposed to be on and is not, call that provider with the confirmation number you got when you enrolled. Those are different phone calls. Mixing them up wastes the hour their offices are still open.

If you never made our call, do it the same day and then enroll the local utilities before they close. Same-week setup is possible for the services on the call. Same-week water or regulated electric depends on that provider after you enroll. Nobody else can make that last call for you.

Common questions

Can someone chase a missed local start for me?

The provider will talk to the account holder. If you enrolled, you call them. If you did not, enroll. We can resend the notes while you do.

What if I only have a weekend?

Make our call first so internet and deregulated electric, if that is your market, are set up. Use the local provider's online enrollment if the notes say it exists. Bring ID. Monday may be too late for a same-day municipal start.

Does this include stopping service at the old place?

Yes, and those stop orders are yours to place with the companies already billing you. Our call sets up the new services we can set up. It does not close the old water account.
