Local utilities we research. Everything else we set up on the call.

A move-in call with Utility Connect does two different jobs, and they are not interchangeable. Local utilities are researched and sent to you. Everything else is set up with you on the call. Mixing those two jobs is how a household thinks the city water account opened itself, or how a partner promises that "the utilities are connected" when only the internet was.

Local utilities are gas, water, trash, and electricity in a regulated market. In those cases the provider has to speak with the account holder. We locate who serves the address and send you the names, phone numbers, and how to enroll. We do not open those accounts. Electricity in a deregulated market, internet, TV and cable, satellite, phone, home security, insurance, home warranty, and movers are the other list. Those are shopped and set up on the call, with you there to choose and agree.

What counts as a local utility

Gas, water, and trash are local almost everywhere. One company, one city department, or one district serves the address, and that provider expects the person who will be on the bill to start the account. Electricity joins that list only in a regulated market, where you do not choose a supplier. The poles and the bill belong to the same utility, and that utility wants to hear from you.

A regulated electric company is not a worse version of a choice market. It is a different rule. There is nothing for us to "shop" in the way a Texas electricity plan gets shopped. There is a company to identify, a phone number that actually reaches their start desk, and a list of what they will ask you for: the address, the start date, identification, and sometimes a deposit. That packet is the work. Enrolling is yours.

What we set up on the call

If the address is in a deregulated electricity market, we compare the plans that can serve it and set up the one you choose while you are on the line. Internet, TV, cable, satellite, and phone work the same way. We confirm what actually reaches the building, walk the offers, and complete the setup with you, including an install window when the provider needs one. Home security, insurance, home warranty, and movers are set up on that same call when you want them. You are not handed a pile of tabs and told to finish after dinner. You hear the options and the order is placed with you on the phone.

The household is not billed by Utility Connect for the call. You pay the companies you choose, on their bills, including any deposit a local utility requires when you enroll with them.

What the local-utility notes contain

  • Which of gas, water, trash, and regulated electric apply at that address, and which a landlord or HOA already covers
  • The provider name and a phone number for starting service
  • What they usually require from the account holder: ID, a start date, a deposit
  • A note when the unit number or lot number has to be read a certain way

Those notes are not a confirmation number. A confirmation for a local utility exists after you enroll with them. A confirmation for internet, a deregulated electric plan, security, or a mover exists because that setup was completed on the call.

Why the line is drawn there

Regulated and municipal providers require the account holder on the order. Sending your ID to us, or asking us to impersonate you at the city, does not create a valid water account. It creates a rejected order and a first night with no service. On the services we can set up, you are still the customer of record. You are simply on the call while it is done, so the rate, the term, and the appointment are ones you heard.

If someone asks us to "just sign me up" for water, gas, trash, or regulated electric, the answer is no. If they ask us to set up internet or a deregulated electric plan, that is the call.

When to make the call

About two weeks before you have keys is a comfortable window. That is enough time for us to set up the services that need an appointment, and enough time for you to enroll the local utilities before their offices close for the weekend. If you already know the address, starting as early as 45 days out is reasonable. Earlier than that, offers move. If you get the keys tomorrow, call (877) 587-9566 the same day. We will set up what can still be set up, and send the local-utility information so you can enroll before cutoff.

Common questions

Can Utility Connect turn on my water or my regulated electric?

No. We find who serves the address and send you their information. You contact that provider and enroll. Service starts when they accept your start date.

Will the internet be set up without me?

No. It is set up on the call with you. You choose the plan and agree to the appointment. We do not place that order after you hang up and hope it matches what you wanted.

What if I only want the local-utility phone numbers?

Call anyway and say so. We will send gas, water, trash, and regulated electric if those apply. You can decline the services we would otherwise set up.

The notes themselves are described in what is in the information we send. Start at this form or call (877) 587-9566.
